Is it time to go back to basics?

And just like that, it’s November once again. It’s a little hard to believe how quickly this year has flown by. It seems like only yesterday that there was sunlight past 5:00 pm here where I live.

Maybe it’s the shorter days, or maybe it’s that Remembrance Day falls during this month, but November has a certain feeling as we get ready for that holidays that makes it the perfect time of year to take stock, to assess how future-ready you, your team, and your organization are, and to start putting a plan in place to ramp up your future-readiness in the year ahead.

To do just that, I recommend going back to basics.

Going back to basics sounds simple enough, but it can be overwhelming if you’re not sure where to start. I recommend beginning with these three things:

1. Empower Your Team

As recent research from McLean & Company shows, future-ready leadership “isn’t about doing more; it’s about enabling and empowering others to achieve more.”

So how can you enable and empower your team members? Create a community of shared understanding, in which listening, empathy, and vulnerability are prioritized. Remember, it’s not always what you say but how you say it that matters!

2. Use Perspective to Your Advantage

Ask yourself and your team what went well this year, and specifically identify, knowledge, skills and abilities helped them to succeed.

The next question to ask, is how can you apply these to the initiatives in the coming year?

3. Crush Complexity with Simplicity

When you or others are feeling overwhelmed, this simply means you have a lot on your plate. Break this down to small simple manageable steps. When things are too big or complex, in my experience we simply don’t do them.

This will help your team build confidence through small, consistent actions and increase the likelihood of achieving your goals. Check out my website to learn more about turning goals into action.
